The housing stock here is largely pitched-roof, which means asphalt shingles for most homes, and the usual questions are about when a roof has reached the end rather than which exotic material to use. The town also has a good deal of multi-family and association property, where the work is less about one roof and more about sequencing several so the site stays usable.
Winter is the other factor. Ice dams form when heat escaping through the roof melts snow that then refreezes at the colder eaves, and the water backing up behind that ridge of ice goes under the shingles rather than off them. It is a New England problem rather than a general one, and it is the reason snow and ice removal is a service here at all.
